elld_20101The Chilean Association of Lighting Designers (DIA A.G.) is organizing the first Latin American meeting of Lighting Design (ELLD 2010), from 17th to 23rd October in Valparaiso, Chile. This event counts with the collaboration and sponsorship of  AsBAI (Associação Brasileira de Arquitetos of iluminação) and the Faculty of Engineering of the Catholic University of Valparaiso.

Latin America has its own Professional Lighting Design. Due to cultural and economic conditions, and specific techniques, our particular way of working is different compared to the U.S. and EU. It is important to explore the mechanisms that can connect the Lighting Design practitioners of Latin America to help strengthen our common identity, disseminate our work, and create a platform for professional and educational exchange in the region.

What does ELLD 2010 have to offer?
The following activities will be developed within the framework of ELLD 2010:
-  4 day-long Day Lghting Course.
-  2 day-long Conference.
-  Roundtable discussion with Latin American Lighting Designers.
-  International professional lighting fair.
-  Light art interventions around landmarks of the city of Valparaiso.
-  “Origins and Culture of Lighting Design in Latin America” exhibition.
-  Closing party.

This event is geared towards key players in the field of Lighting Design:

Activities
Day Lighting Course
This course is aimed at Lighting Design professionals and will be conducted by
Matthew Tanteri (PAI), Day Lighting consultant and expert in teaching this discipline. During the 4 days of its duration, the course will focus on the design process using natural light, glazing and how to integrate Day Lighting and electric lighting.

Lighting Design Conference
The conference will include 24 lectures by outstanding professionals from the U.S.,
Europe and Latin America, focusing on the following topics: Urban Lighting, Architectural Lighting, Day Lighting and Sustainability, Heritage and Museums.
Among the special guests we will have the presence of exponents such as Roger Narboni (FR) (PLDA, ACE), Matthew Tanteri (USA) (PAI), Anne Bureau (FR) (PLDA – ACE).

Roundtable Discussion
On the third day of the conference there will be a discussion panel with professionals from around the region who will make a diagnosis of the current state of the profession in different countries, who will analyze the options for strengthening the links between the professionals and the different ways of supporting the development of the Lighting Design profession in Latin America.

International professional lighting equipment fair
During the course of the ELLD 2010 meeting, an exhibition of products and

services, offered by the lighting industry, will complement the exhibition program. In a specially adapted space, the main lighting equipment manufacturers from the U.S. and EU will have the opportunity to show their products to different professionals and Latin American Lighting Design specifiers who will be gathered at this event.

Light art Interventions around urban landmarks of the city of Valparaiso

As a way of opening ELLD 2010 to the community and connecting the Lighting Design work with public spaces, a series of lighting interventions will be  set up around different landmarks of Valparaiso. These temporary installations will highlight the architectural heritage of the host city and contribute towards the Bicentennial commemoration activities.

“Origins and Culture of Lighting Design in Latin America exhibition”
This exhibition will bring together an important amount of documentary material
that describes the history of lighting in Argentina, Brazil and Chile and explores the
existence of a Culture of Lighting Design in Latin America. This exhibition will remain open
to attendees of ELLD 2010 and the general public throughout the week of the event.

Closing party
At the end of the ELLD 2010 activities, there will be a dinner and a closing party that
will allow all the participants to gather and celebrate the closure of this event.

Audience
ELLD 2010 will receive approximately 250 attendees. Exponents of professional Lighting
Design from the U.S., EU and Latin America will exchange opinions and experiences
about the current state of the profession. Architects, Designers and Electrical Engineers
who are interested in lighting will also participate. This professional audience will also include the presence of technical staff from various central government agencies, such as municipalities, along with decision makers from private corporations.
Future Lighting Designers will have a guaranteed space at ELLD 2010. 30 foreign
students and 30 local students pursuing their final years of Lighting, Architecture, Design
and Engineering, will be invited to take part in this gathering.

They will be selected by the organizing committee, through an application process that will operate from the official website. The selected students will have the right to participate in ELLD 2010 without cost. The exhibiting companies will have the opportunity to meet with the main players in Latin American Lighting Design, present their Products, and build and strengthen links that will help to develop new
markets.

Valparaíso Location

ELLD 2010 will be held in the city of Valparaiso, Chile. This city is located along the coast of the Pacific Ocean, 110 km from Santiago’s international airport and 130 km from the center of Chile’s capital. In 2003 Valparaiso was declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) due to its architectural and cultural heritage. Its unique topography, high density constructions, multicultural heritage and port tradition, have given rise to a unique urban fabric, which is rich in footpaths and interesting sights that look over the bay. ELLD 2010 coincides with the 200 year commemoration of the Republic of Chile and a number of activities that are being carried out throughout the country as part of the bicentennial celebration.
